Toby Gibbs, Coret
Tell us about your space - what will we find if we come and see you at Shires Yard?
We're always being told Coret is a little haven of peace within the chaos of the city centre! Which is definitely my favourite compliment to get. I'm very big on creating a relaxed, welcoming environment for everyone who walks through the door. Whether it's the soft candlelight from the tea lights we have out throughout the day, to the soft wooden furnishings, we want you to feel as comfortable as possible!
What have customers been loving so far?
We have been absolutely flying through our El Chollo coffee beans at the moment. For those not in the know, we have an ever-changing board of coffee beans we use to make each coffee depending on what's in season and who we have as our guest roaster that month. The El Chollo, roasted by our house roaster Colours Coffee who are based just outside of Chippenham, comes through with really rich notes of dark chocolate and cherries and tastes like a cherry bakewell when used to make a flat white.
What will we usually hear on repeat on your playlist in the café?
Now this depends on the day and who's on shift! Most of the time, expect to hear a blend of early 2000s - modern indie for a fun and funky background vibe. Expect to hear a lot of Paolo Nutini, Hozier and Lawrence popping up! Although on a Saturday morning I will admit to putting on something fun and cheesy to pump myself up for a busy day of service. The Mika radio on Spotify hates to see me coming…
What are you most excited about for the season ahead?
I am so excited for all of the events I've got planned! I've been so fortunate to have so many lovely event organisers in the community reach out asking to host their events in our space. So with those combined with some events of my own invention, it's becoming a rare sight for us not to have something happening. Big ones at the moment are the Silent Book Club we have happening every first Wednesday and third Sunday of the month, and our Coffee Cuppings are becoming a bit hit too - think wine tasting, but for coffee! I'm just so happy to be holding events more focused on building a community than anything, like our Pumpkin carving event (26th October), where we're just opening the doors for people to come together and carve pumpkins while enjoying the fun Autumnal vibes of the night - BYOP!
Why did you choose to open in the city of Bath, any personal connection to it?
For me personally, I've been living in Bath for around 13 years now and it's the city I've really grown to call home. Over the years and my time working in coffee shops I have so many regulars that I see every single day and the thought of going anywhere else and losing that community I've built up is honestly heartbreaking to think about.
I also think we are absolutely SPOILED for good coffee here! I've spent a lot of time travelling around the UK, and I can confidently say Bath/Bristol are the best places in the UK to find good coffee, with Manchester and Glasgow close runners up.
When you’re not at the yard, where is your favourite place to go in Bath?
This will surprise nobody, but you'll find me in a coffee shop! Colonna & Small's and Society Café are my go-tos, the coffee scene in Bath is so lovely it's no surprise we're constantly popping in to visit each other and enjoy each other’s coffees. Aside from that, I'm a big reader, so it's highly likely you'll see me in Mr B's with a stack of books in hand ready to add to my TBR pile.
Something surprising about you / your business…
Honestly that's a bit of a hard one, I feel like I'm very forthcoming with what we do - being open and honest is what I'm all about! Something that might surprise you about me personally is that I'm really into weightlifting - pop in and ask me what numbers I'm lifting at the moment and I'll talk your ear off about my current PR's.
